When I sat down to design this dress, I had a clear vision. I wanted something that would feel like a true heirloom piece. Something a little girl could wear to a wedding, a birthday party, or a spring portrait session and feel absolutely special. I also wanted it to challenge me as a designer, combining several of my favorite lace techniques into one cohesive garment.
The pineapple lace skirt was non-negotiable. Those motifs have such timeless elegance. But I also wanted that dreamy tiered ruffle collar and the airy filet mesh bodice that keeps the dress lightweight despite all the detail. Getting all three elements to work together took some serious math and a lot of swatching.
I am SO pleased with how it turned out. This mint green lace ruffle dress crochet pattern is exactly what I hoped it would be. Structured but not stiff. Detailed but not overwhelming. And that scalloped hem? It moves beautifully when a little one twirls. If you have been wanting to tackle a truly impressive garment project, this is the one.
About This Crochet Pattern
This dress is designed for girls ages 4 through 8 and comes in three sizes. The construction is top-down in joined rounds, which means no side seams to worry about. You will start at the neckline, work through a raglan-style yoke, continue into the filet mesh bodice with waist shaping, then transition into the stunning pineapple lace skirt. The tiered ruffle collar gets worked separately and attached at the end.
I will be honest with you. This is an advanced project. You should be comfortable with filet mesh, pineapple lace construction, working in joined rounds, top-down garment shaping, and constructing a tiered ruffle before you begin. If those terms feel unfamiliar, I would recommend practicing each technique individually first. The result is absolutely worth the effort, but you want to enjoy the process rather than struggle through it.
The entire garment is worked in a single mint green color, which really lets the stitch patterns shine. That gorgeous lace structure needs room to be the star.
Finished Measurements
Size 4: Chest 23 inches (58.5 cm), Length shoulder to hem 22 inches (56 cm)
Size 6: Chest 25 inches (63.5 cm), Length shoulder to hem 24 inches (61 cm)

All instructions are written for Size 4 with Size 6 and Size 8 changes in parentheses as follows: Size 4 (Size 6, Size 8).
Materials Needed
Yarn: DK weight, 100 percent mercerized cotton or cotton-blend, approximately 900 (1050, 1200) yards or 823 (960, 1097) meters in mint green.
Hook: US Size E-4 (3.5 mm) crochet hook.
Notions: Stitch markers (at least 6), yarn needle, scissors, 5 small buttons approximately 3/8 inch (10 mm) each or 24 inches (61 cm) of 1/4 inch (6 mm) satin ribbon for back closure, rust-proof blocking pins, blocking mat or towels.
Yarn Suggestions
Option 1: Paintbox Yarns Simply DK (100 percent cotton, 137 yards per 50 g ball). This yarn has excellent stitch definition and comes in a mint colorway called Spearmint. You will need 7 (8, 9) balls.
Option 2: Drops Safran (100 percent Egyptian cotton, 175 yards per 50 g ball). Slightly lighter drape with a subtle sheen. You will need 6 (7, 7) balls.
Option 3: Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton in Mint (100 percent mercerized cotton, 186 yards per 100 g ball). Widely available. You will need 5 (6, 7) balls.
A quick note on yarn substitution. Choose a smooth, tightly plied DK cotton. Avoid fluffy, brushed, or fuzzy yarns as they will obscure the lace structure. If substituting, swatch carefully and match gauge exactly before beginning. A heavier yarn will produce a stiffer garment. A lighter yarn may cause the pineapple motifs to droop.
Gauge
With US E-4 (3.5 mm) hook and mercerized DK cotton:
18 stitches and 22 rows = 4 inches (10 cm) in filet mesh (dc, ch-1 grid).
One pineapple motif repeat (16 stitches wide including 1 ch-1 separator on each side) = approximately 3.5 inches (9 cm) wide after blocking.
Gauge is mandatory. This is a fitted garment. A difference of even one stitch per 4 inches will result in a dress that is a full size off. Swatch, block your swatch, then measure. I know it feels tedious, but trust me on this one.
Abbreviations
Special Stitches
Shell: Work 5 dc into the same stitch or space. This creates a fan shape used in the ruffle scallop edging.
Pineapple Cluster (PC): (Yo, insert hook into indicated sp, yo, pull up lp, yo, pull through 2 lps) 5 times into the same sp, yo, pull through all 6 lps on hook. This is the tip stitch of each pineapple, worked into the final ch-sp of the pineapple narrowing.
Beginning Pineapple Base: Into a ch-3 sp or ch-4 sp, work (dc, ch 1) 8 times, then dc once more. This produces 9 dc with 8 ch-1 spaces between them, forming the wide base of one pineapple motif.
Pineapple Row Decrease: At each successive round of the pineapple, you will skip the outermost ch-1 sp on each side and work into one fewer ch-1 sp than the previous round, thus narrowing the pineapple by 1 dc on each side per round.
Filet Square (open): Dc into stitch, ch 1, skip 1 st, dc into next st. This creates one open filet square.
Filet Square (closed): Dc into stitch, dc into next st, dc into next st. Three dc form one closed filet square.
Scallop Edging: Sl st into st, ch 3, work 4 dc into same st, skip 2 sts, sl st into next st. This produces one scallop shell.
Ruffle Tier Row: Into every dc of the previous foundation row, work (dc, ch 1, dc). This doubles the stitch count and produces the ruffled wave. Scallop edging is then added to the outer edge.
Pattern Notes Before You Begin
The dress is worked in joined rounds, not spirals. At the end of each round, join with a sl st to the top of the beginning ch-3 (which counts as dc) and chain 3 to begin the next round unless otherwise stated.
The beginning ch-3 counts as one dc throughout this pattern unless otherwise noted.
The back opening runs from the neckline to approximately 5 inches (12.7 cm) down the center back. In the bodice section, you will work back and forth in rows rather than rounds for 5 inches to create this opening, then join into rounds again at the waist.
Stitch markers should be placed at the 4 raglan points at the start of construction and moved up with each round. This helps you keep track of where your increases belong.
All stitch counts given in parentheses at the end of each row or round reflect the total stitch count including any chain spaces that serve as structural stitches.
The pineapple motif base uses a ch-3 sp as its foundation. The number of pineapple repeats is 6 (6, 7) repeats around the skirt.
Blocking is essential. Pin the pineapple motifs open and allow to dry completely before finishing. This step transforms the dress from nice to absolutely stunning.
Step By Step Instructions
Neckline and Raglan Setup
The dress begins at the neckline with a raglan-style yoke that separates into front, back, and two sleeve caps.
Foundation Chain: Ch 68 (72, 76). Join with sl st to first ch to form a ring, being careful not to twist.
Placement of raglan markers:
The back is split at center back to create the opening. Left back and right back together equal 20 (23, 24) stitches, front equals 24 (23, 24) stitches, each sleeve equals 10 (11, 12) stitches, plus 4 raglan marker stitches = 68 (72, 76) total.
Yoke Section (Worked Back and Forth in Rows)
The yoke is worked flat for the back opening, then joined into rounds at the underarm.
Yoke Row 1 (RS): Ch 3 (counts as dc), dc into each st across, working 2 dc into each of the 4 raglan marker sts. Turn. (76, 80, 84 sts)
Yoke Row 2 (WS): Ch 3, dc into each st across. Turn. (76, 80, 84 sts)
Yoke Row 3 (RS): Ch 3, dc to 1 st before raglan marker, 2 dc into marker st, dc into marker st again, 2 dc into st after marker, dc across to next marker, rep from this shaping at all 4 raglan points. Turn. (84, 88, 92 sts)
Each RS row adds 8 sts total (2 at each of 4 raglan points). Each WS row is worked even.
Continue working Yoke Rows 2 and 3 alternately until yoke measures 2 inches (5 cm) from foundation chain, ending after a RS row.

Underarm Separation

Bodice (Filet Mesh Section)
The bodice is worked in open filet mesh (dc, ch 1, skip 1) creating the lattice effect visible in the torso of the dress.
Bodice Setup Round: Join yarn to first st of body round if needed. Ch 4 (counts as dc, ch 1), skip 1 st, (dc into next st, ch 1, skip 1 st) around, working dc into each ch of the underarm bridges as regular sts, joining any odd sts with dc at join. Join with sl st to 3rd ch of beg ch-4.

Checkpoint: After the bodice section, your piece should measure approximately 5.5 inches (14 cm) from the underarm separation. The piece should be approximately 19.5 inches (49.5 cm) in circumference at the waist for Size 4. If your measurement differs by more than 0.75 inches (2 cm), recheck your gauge swatch before continuing.

This round consolidates the filet mesh and establishes the ch-3 base spaces for each pineapple motif. The number of pineapple repeats is 6 (6, 7).
Each pineapple base requires: 3 dc + 8 ch-1 + 1 dc = 14 sts, plus 2 dc separator sts between pineapples = 16 sts per repeat unit.
Skirt Transition Round (Size 4): Ch 3, dc in same st, dc in next st, (dc, ch 3, dc) in next st, dc in next st, [dc in next st, dc in next 2 sts, (dc, ch 3, dc) in next st, dc in next 2 sts, dc2tog, dc in next 3 sts, (dc, ch 3, dc) in next st, dc in next 3 sts] 5 times, end with sl st. Pineapple Base Round: This round establishes the (dc, ch 1) x 8, dc span of each pineapple.

Each pineapple base has 9 dc with 8 ch-1 sps between them. This is the widest row of the pineapple.
Pineapple Skirt (Main Body)
The pineapple motif is narrowed by working one fewer ch-1 sp on each side with each subsequent round. Between pineapples, 2 dc stand as solid columns. The skirt will have 8 narrowing rounds before the pineapple tip, then a scallop border.
Skirt Round 1 (Pineapple Row 1, 8 sp wide): Ch 4, dc in same sp, ch 1, [sc in each of 8 ch-1 sps across pineapple, ch 3, dc in 2 dc column, ch 3] around. Join. (8 sc per pineapple)

Checkpoint: After completing the pineapple tip round, the skirt portion should measure approximately 9 inches (22.9 cm) from the waist. The total dress length should be approximately 14.5 inches (36.8 cm) from the shoulder for Size 4.
Lower Mesh Round: Ch 4, (dc in next st or sp, ch 1) around evenly, picking up into dc columns and PC tips. Join. (Adjust to 96 sts for Size 4 and 6, 112 sts for Size 8)
Second Pineapple Tier
This repeats the same 8-round pineapple structure on a new base, adding length.
Second Tier Pineapple Base Round: Ch 3, dc in next st, ch 2, [dc in next st, (ch 1, dc) 8 times, ch 2, dc in next 2 sts, ch 2] 6 (6, 7) times. Join.
Work Skirt Rounds 1 through 8 and Pineapple Tip Round again for the second tier.
After the second pineapple tier, the dress length should be approximately 22 inches (55.9 cm) for Size 4, 24 inches (61 cm) for Size 6, and 26 inches (66 cm) for Size 8.
Checkpoint: Measure the total dress length from the neckline to the current working edge. The measurement should match your target length within 1 inch (2.5 cm) before you proceed to the scallop hem.
Scallop Hem Border
Consolidation Round: Ch 3, dc in each st and ch-sp around, adjusting to a multiple of 3 for scallop fit. Join.
These are multiples of 3.
Scallop Round 1: Sl st into first dc, ch 3, 4 dc into same dc, skip 2 dc, sl st into next dc, [ch 3, 4 dc into same sl st, skip 2 dc, sl st into next dc] around. Join. (32, 32, 35 scallop shells)

Sleeve Caps
The sleeve cap is a short capped sleeve, not a full sleeve. It is worked in the round from the held underarm stitches.
Join yarn to first held sleeve st at underarm.
Sleeve Setup Round: Ch 3, dc in each held sleeve st, then dc into each ch of the underarm bridge from the body separation. Join.
Sleeve Round 1: Ch 3, dc in each st around. Join. (26, 27, 28 sts)

Ruffle Collar (Worked Separately)
The ruffle collar is a three-tier cascade attached to the neckline edge. It is worked back and forth in rows.
Collar Foundation: With RS facing, join yarn to neckline edge. Sc in each neckline st around, working into the base loops of the foundation chain. Do not join. Work in rows back and forth. (68, 72, 76 sc)
Tier 1 Row 1 (RS): Ch 4 (counts as dc, ch 1), skip 1, (dc in next st, ch 1, skip 1) across. Turn. (34, 36, 38 dc + 34, 36, 38 ch-1 sps = 68, 72, 76 sts)
Tier 1 Row 2: Ch 3, (dc, ch 1, dc) in each ch-1 sp across. Turn. This doubles the stitch count. (102, 108, 114 sts)

Tier 3 (Optional, for fullest effect): Reattach yarn to base of Tier 2. Sc in each st. (68, 72, 76 sc) Work 2 dc in each sc (136, 144, 152 dc), then scallop across in groups of 3. Fasten off.
The three tiers cascade in increasing fullness, creating the layered ruffle effect shown on the finished dress.
Sew collar to neckline opening edge if not picked up directly. Back edges of collar should align with the center back opening edges.
Back Closure
Using the yarn needle and a length of yarn, work a single crochet buttonhole band along the right back opening edge: pick up 1 sc in every other row end along the 5 inch (12.7 cm) opening. On left back edge, pick up 1 sc in every other row end and work 5 evenly spaced ch-2 buttonholes (ch 2, skip 1 sc). Sew 5 small buttons to right band to correspond. Alternatively, thread satin ribbon through the filet mesh at the back opening and tie in a bow.
Size Customization Tips
To lengthen the skirt: Add a third pineapple tier before the scallop hem. Each pineapple tier adds approximately 4.5 inches (11.4 cm) of length.
To add chest width: Add 16 sts to the foundation chain (one full pineapple repeat unit) and redistribute raglan segments accordingly. This is equivalent to going up approximately one size.
To shorten for a toddler size (2T to 3T): Reduce foundation chain by 8 sts, work only 4 raglan increase rows, and work only 1 pineapple tier. Bodice filet mesh should be reduced to 3 rounds.
To adjust the bodice length: Each additional or removed round of filet mesh adds or removes approximately 0.75 inches (1.9 cm) at gauge.
Finishing and Blocking
Wet Blocking Method: Soak the finished dress in cool water with a small amount of wool wash or gentle soap for 20 minutes. Gently press out water without wringing. Lay flat on blocking mats. Using rust-proof pins, open each pineapple motif wide and pin at the scallop points. Pin the collar scallops open. Pin the hem scallops open and flat. Allow to dry completely, which may take 24 to 48 hours depending on humidity. Do not remove pins until fully dry.
