Sunshine Yellow Dahlia Crochet Dress Free Crochet Pattern

Last summer, my niece announced she wanted to wear "a dress made of flowers" to her birthday party. I laughed at first, but then the idea stuck with me. I started sketching, swatching, and before I knew it, I had yarn scattered across my entire living room floor. What began as a whimsical request turned into one of the most rewarding projects I have ever made. This Sunshine Yellow Dahlia Crochet Dress is the result of that creative adventure, and I cannot wait to walk you through every single step.

Sunshine Yellow Dahlia Crochet Dress Free Crochet Pattern

This stunning wearable art piece features a fitted single crochet bodice, an openwork diamond lace waist, a flared mesh skirt, and sixty hand-rolled spiral dahlia appliques in alternating shades of yellow. A soft tulle underskirt adds volume and movement to the hem. The construction is straightforward once you understand the flow: you work from the top edge down in joined rounds, shape through the waist, flare the skirt with gradual increases, then add all the gorgeous details.

I will be honest with you. This is an intermediate to advanced project. You will work joined rounds, lace repeats, mesh shaping, applique assembly, and garment finishing. But if you have made a few garments before and feel comfortable reading a pattern, you can absolutely do this. I will break down every section so nothing catches you off guard.

Finished Measurements

Before you begin, let me share the finished dimensions so you can decide if this size works for you or if you need to make adjustments.

Materials You Will Need

Gathering your supplies before starting makes the whole process smoother. Here is everything you need:

Yarn:

  • DK weight 100% cotton yarn in Color A (mustard yellow): 900 yd / 823 m
  • DK weight 100% cotton yarn in Color B (pale yellow): 520 yd / 475 m
  • Yarn Suggestions:

  • Paintbox Yarns Cotton DK offers crisp stitch definition and comes in many yellow shades
  • Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton DK provides smooth cotton with firm body
  • Hobbii Rainbow Cotton 8/8 has a matte finish perfect for structured applique flowers
  • Tools:

  • 2.5 mm crochet hook, or size needed to match gauge
  • Yarn needle
  • Stitch markers
  • Scissors
  • Measuring tape
  • Sewing needle and matching thread
  • Additional Materials:

  • Light yellow tulle: 1.5 yd / 1.4 m, 54-60 in / 137-152 cm wide
  • Optional: 1/4 in / 6 mm elastic for upper edge support
  • Substitution note: Choose a smooth DK cotton that creates a firm but flexible fabric. Avoid very stretchy acrylics for the bodice unless you plan to add elastic support.

    Gauge

Getting your gauge right is crucial for garment fit. Take the time to swatch before diving in.

Solid single crochet (sc) gauge: 20 sc and 24 rows = 4 in / 10 cm after blocking

Mesh gauge: 5 mesh repeats and 8 mesh rounds = 4 in / 10 cm after blocking

Swatch and match gauge before starting. If your swatch is too large, try a smaller hook. If it is too small, go up a hook size.

    Stitch Guide and Abbreviations

This pattern uses US crochet terms. If you are familiar with UK terms, remember that US single crochet (sc) equals UK double crochet (dc), and US double crochet (dc) equals UK treble (tr).

    Abbreviations:

  • beg = beginning
  • ch = chain
  • dc = double crochet (yarn over, insert hook, pull up loop, yarn over, pull through 2 loops twice)
  • dec = decrease
  • fsc = foundation single crochet
  • inc = increase
  • pm = place marker
  • rep = repeat
  • rnd = round
  • sc = single crochet (insert hook, pull up loop, yarn over, pull through both loops)
  • sc2tog = single crochet 2 together (a decrease)
  • sl st = slip stitch
  • sp = space
  • st/sts = stitch/stitches
  • yo = yarn over
  • Special Stitches:

Foundation Single Crochet (fsc): Ch 2, insert hook in 2nd ch from hook, yo and pull up loop, ch 1 to make the foundation chain, yo and pull through both loops. For each next stitch, insert hook under the chain just made, yo and pull up loop, ch 1, yo and pull through both loops. This creates a stretchy, flexible foundation that is perfect for garment edges.

sc2tog: Insert hook in next st, yo and pull up loop, insert hook in following st, yo and pull up loop, yo and pull through all 3 loops. This decreases your stitch count by one.

Mesh repeat: Dc in marked dc or sc, ch 2, skip next 2 sts or work over the next ch-2 sp. One repeat equals 3 sts of width.

Spiral dahlia flower: Work a long shell strip, then roll it into a spiral and stitch through the base to secure.

    Pattern Notes and Checkpoints

Read through these notes before starting. They will save you time and frustration later.

  • Ch 1 at the start of sc rounds does not count as a stitch
  • Ch 3 at the start of dc mesh rounds counts as the first dc
  • Join each round with a sl st to the first stitch unless told otherwise
  • Keep the join line at center back
  • Use stitch markers every 10 sts on the bodice and every 3-st mesh repeat on increase rounds
  • Flower placement is sewn after blocking. Lay the dress flat and pin all flowers before stitching
  • Checkpoints to verify your progress:

  • After the solid bodice, the tube should measure about 6.5 in / 16.5 cm tall
  • After the lace waist, the bodice plus lace should measure about 9 in / 23 cm tall
  • Before tulle, the crochet skirt should measure about 18 in / 45.5 cm from lace edge to hem
  • Left-handed makers: Work the same stitch counts and rounds. Your spiral flowers will curl in the opposite direction. Keep all flowers facing the same way when sewing them to the dress.

    Size Customization

For a smaller or larger bust, adjust the top foundation in multiples of 10 sts. Every 10 sts changes the solid bodice by about 2 in / 5 cm. Keep the lace waist divisible by 10 and each mesh round divisible by 3. Add or remove skirt increase rounds in 24-st increments for a similar flare.

    The Bodice

With Color A, fsc 160. Join with sl st to first fsc, being careful not to twist.

Alternative foundation: ch 161, sc in 2nd ch from hook and each ch across, join. (160 sc)

Rnds 1-8: Ch 1, sc in each st around, join. (160 sc)

Rnd 9: Ch 1, sc in next 15 sts, 2 sc in next st; rep from 10 times, join. (170 sc)

Rnds 10-18: Ch 1, sc in each st around, join. (170 sc)

Rnd 19: Ch 1, sc in next 15 sts, sc2tog; rep from 10 times, join. (160 sc)

Rnds 20-25: Ch 1, sc in each st around, join. (160 sc)

Rnd 26: Ch 1, sc in next 14 sts, sc2tog; rep from 10 times, join. (150 sc)

Rnds 27-28: Ch 1, sc in each st around, join. (150 sc)

Bodice checkpoint: Top edge about 32 in / 81.5 cm; bust about 34 in / 86.5 cm; waist about 30 in / 76 cm; height about 6.5 in / 16.5 cm.

    Diamond-Style Lace Waist

This section creates that beautiful openwork detail at the waist.

Rnd 30: Ch 3, dc in next st, ch 3, skip 3 sts, dc in next 2 sts, ch 3, skip 3 sts; rep from around, join. (30 dc pairs + 30 ch-3 sps)

Rnd 31: Sl st into next dc and ch-3 sp, ch 3, 2 dc in same sp, ch 2, 3 dc in next ch-3 sp, ch 2; rep from around, join. (30 clusters + 30 ch-2 sps)

Rnd 32: Ch 3, dc in next 2 dc, ch 3, skip ch-2 sp, dc in next 3 dc, ch 3, skip ch-2 sp; rep from around, join. (30 clusters + 30 ch-3 sps)

Rnds 33-35: Repeat Rnds 31-32 once, then repeat Rnd 31 once more. (30 pattern repeats)

Rnd 36: Ch 1, sc in each dc and 2 sc in each ch sp around, increasing 30 evenly, join. (180 sc)

    Flared Mesh Skirt

Now comes the fun part where your skirt starts to take shape and flare out beautifully.

Rnd 37: Ch 3, skip next 2 sts, dc in next st, ch 2, skip next 2 sts; rep from around, join. (60 mesh repeats)

Rnds 38-40: Sl st into first ch-2 sp, ch 3, ch 2, dc in next dc, ch 2; rep from around, join. (60 repeats)

Rnd 41: Ch 1, sc in each dc and 2 sc in each ch-2 sp, increase 24 evenly. (204 sc)

Rnds 42-45: Work mesh repeat as for Rnds 37-40. (68 repeats)

Rnds 52-55: Work mesh repeat. (84 repeats)

Rnd 56: Return to sc base, increase 24 evenly. (276 sc)

Rnds 57-60: Work mesh repeat. (92 repeats)

Rnd 61: Return to sc base, increase 24 evenly. (300 sc)

Rnds 62-65: Work mesh repeat. (100 repeats)

Rnd 66: Return to sc base, increase 24 evenly. (324 sc)

Rnds 67-68: Work mesh repeat. (108 repeats)

Rnd 69: Ch 1, sc in each dc and 2 sc in each ch-2 sp, join. Fasten off. (324 sc)

    Spiral Dahlia Flowers

These dimensional flowers are what make this dress truly spectacular. You will make 60 flowers total: 30 in Color A (mustard yellow) and 30 in Color B (pale yellow).

    For each flower, ch 32.

Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and each ch across. (31 sc)

Row 2: Ch 3, 4 dc in first st, 5 dc in each st across. Fasten off, leaving a 12 in / 30 cm sewing tail. (155 dc)

Roll the strip from one short end into a spiral, keeping the base edge flat. Stitch through the base several times to secure.

    Flower Placement:

Pin 4 skirt bands before sewing:

  • Band 1 at Rnd 45 with 12 flowers
  • Band 2 at Rnd 55 with 14 flowers
  • Band 3 at Rnd 64 with 16 flowers
  • Band 4 just above the hem with 18 flowers
  • Alternate colors across each band. Stitch only through the flower base so the petals stay dimensional.

    Straps

Try on before determining final strap length.

Join Color A at front top edge, ch 58 for a 14.5 in / 37 cm strap, sl st to the matching back point. Sc back across the chain, sl st to front edge, fasten off. Repeat for second strap.

Add or remove chains in pairs for fit.

    Upper Edge Support (Optional):

Thread 1/4 in / 6 mm elastic through the inside of the top edge or sew it under the first round, stretching gently so the top edge sits securely without puckering.

    Tulle Underskirt

The tulle gives the hem its soft, romantic volume.

Cut one rectangle of tulle 9 in / 23 cm tall by 96 in / 244 cm wide. Sew short ends together. Gather the top edge to 30 in / 76 cm and hand-stitch it to the inside of Rnd 36, just below the lace waist. Trim the lower edge so the tulle peeks 1-1.5 in / 2.5-4 cm below the crochet hem.

    Finishing

  • Weave in all ends on the wrong side
  • Steam lightly or wet block flat to measurements. Do not stretch the lace waist out of shape
  • Sew flowers with matching yarn tails or sewing thread, catching several points at the base
  • Try on, adjust strap tension, then secure all strap tails firmly
  • Care Instructions

Hand wash gently in cool water. Roll in a towel to remove moisture. Do not wring. Lay flat to dry. Store flat or folded to protect the flowers and tulle.

    Troubleshooting Tips

If you run into issues, here are some solutions:

  • Bodice too loose: Add elastic support or remove 10 sts at the foundation on your next version
  • Skirt ruffles too much: Block downward and reduce one increase round
  • Skirt hangs too straight: Add one extra 24-st increase round before the hem
  • Flowers droop: Use shorter stitches for Row 2 or sew through two base points

    Time Estimate

Plan for 28-36 hours of crochet time, plus additional time for blocking and hand sewing. This is definitely a project to savor over several weeks rather than rush through in a weekend.
